Twitter, Tweets, Twits…. What’s Next?
Posted on Jan 30, 2009 - 4:58 PM ESTIf you’re reading this post and have never heard of Twitter before - go here first: http://www.twitter.com and sign up! Then come back and read the rest of this post.
Twitter, the new global phenomenon is slowly gaining momentum, from Obama to CNN to TwitterMoms - everyone seems to be jumping on the twitter bandwagon. Like most people, I was a little hesitant signing up at first - I mean, what’s the point of telling the world what you’re up to every single minute/hour… who really cares? We have facebook status updates for that. But as of recently, I’ve noticed a shift in pattern as more and more people are signing up - instead of randomly following a 100 useless tweeters, now I use it to follow a few high profile ‘tweetizens’ who’s been providing me with constant updates to all things I really care about. I’ve become more of a voyeur now than a participant… and my insatiable quest for news, tech and design updates is finally being satisfied. I can log into twitter at 2am on a friday night and still be entertained with the multitude of links and comments from people I enjoy - no website I have ever encountered has provided me with this kind of entertainment in 140 characters or less.
Of course, Twitter still has its limitations, and there’re tons of features I can think of that they have yet to implement. Good news is that a few hundred websites and apps have popped up in recent months to fill a lot of the void. For example, there is TweetDeck - a stand-alone AIR application you can download and get real-time tweet updates without having to refresh your page. It also lets you group your tweets, filter and update your own tweets all from your desktop. Then there is Stocktwits - if you’re an active trader, then Stocktwits is a must. It skims Twitter for updates tagged with stock symbols and aggregates them onto a single site with stock charts and comments. And since the information flows in real time, you have an added advantage when you’re trying to figure out where the Dow is headed.
So what comes next? Well, here at Pallian Studios, we’ve been pretty busy the past several weeks designing and developing a new Twitter based website that will answer the irrefutable question - How Will Twitter Help Me? While tweetdeck, stocktwits and the hundreds others all help in some way or the other, there’s still a big void to be filled. If you’re a news hungry junkie like me, and want to keep track of what the world is tweeting about at any given second, then tune in the next few weeks while we polish up our website and launch a beta version.
